One survey, a SXSW update, and new 80s music
I’m editing the first of several posts dedicated to craft. Look for that in a few days. In the meantime, I have three items I hope you might pay attention to.
📝 Take the Creative Portfolio Survey
Over 100 creative leaders and talent recruiters have completed the 2026 Creative Portfolio Survey so far. Thanks to them for helping figure out the role of the portfolio in the age of AI. If you work in the creative realm, especially if you help recruit talent at any level, I hope you’ll take five minutes to respond; the survey is anonymous, and closes August 14.
Please share the survey with anyone you know who would like being included.
🗳️ Vote for Kill the Creative Portfolio in the SXSW PanelPicker
My great-grandfather carried painted placards door to door in Minneapolis – his portfolio. Every portfolio is a bet: strangers can only absorb a sample of you. Did AI just call that bet? When a machine can read everything you’ve made, the whole body of work becomes the credential. What happens when probabilistic systems replace deterministic curation, and what should creatives (and those who hire them) do about it?
If that sounds like a SXSW session you’d like to attend, please vote* for it while the PanelPicker is open! The results of the survey mentioned above will debut in this session, along with previous results from a survey in 2010. Community voting ends August 23.

🔊 Listen to the new LASALLE EP
As Mr. Cutts likes to put it, “new music’s cool, but have you ever heard old music?” Well, here’s some new music that sounds about 40 years old on purpose. And my two oldest had a hand bringing it to life.
LASALLE’s EP (Spotify, Apple) was arranged, mixed, mastered and produced in part by Eli Brunelle and Maks Brunelle.
Check out Instagram to see these tracks performed live from the release show at Icehouse. Eli’s on keys and acoustic guitar.
